DEADLINE: The deadline for applications from outside of South Africa has now passed. However, applications from within South Africa will be accepted until 13th May

Global Financial Integrity, one of the world’s leading organisations working to reduce illicit financial flows, is teaming up with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) and the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) to host a three-day conference in Johannesburg, South Africa from 18-20 May 2015 on the connection between human rights and illicit financial flows from Africa. Read more about the conference here.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation, through its Wealth of Nations programme, will be running a scheme for journalists during the conference. Selected journalists will receive training, editorial support and guidance from Thomson Reuters during the event to help them produce high quality stories about illicit finance and human rights.

Please note that all journalists who are selected will be required to produce and publish/broadcast stories as a result of the scheme.

Funding and costs

The conference has a very limited amount of funding available to cover the transport and accommodation costs of participating journalists. Therefore we will accept applications from journalists who do not have the necessary funding to allow them to attend.

However, if you are able to cover the costs of your transport or accommodation, you are encouraged to apply and tell us this within your application.

Due to the limit on funding, please note that we can only cover the costs of journalists who are based in Sub-Saharan Africa but outside South Africa. However, journalists in South Africa are still warmly encouraged to apply if they are based in or near Johannesburg, or if they can cover their own costs of attendance.

Please note there is no entrance fee to attend the conference itself.

Criteria

We are looking for journalists who:

  • Are based in Sub-Saharan Africa and report for one or more African media outlets (freelancers may apply)
  • Have an active interest in illicit financial flows and human rights
  • Have at least 2 years' professional experience
  • Have some track record of reporting on illicit financial flows or related issues
  • Are fluent in English
  • Will be able to publish or broadcast stories about the conference, reaching a large audience if possible

Selected journalists will likely be in Johannesburg from Sunday 17th May (evening) until Wednesday 20th May (afternoon or evening).
